NanoWriMo or the National November Writing Month is on every year. I've attempted and failed at it 2 times so far. But I think it's a cool idea - and it means getting real life encouragement with the writing from fellow writers. It works on the idea of write- don't edit, Editting is for December! Which is actually a good plan for keeping the creative juices flowing. I don't know whether I'm going to do it this year. Is anyone else thinking about doing it?

I am thinking about it... I don't have an idea, but I never usually do when I go into it. I've managed to complete it twice I think out of four or five tries.
I know there are meet ups and stuff locally, but I never go to those. ^^; Anyone ever tried meeting up with a group for Nanowrimo?

Not this year. Though the novel I'm working on now was kind of born during NaNo two years ago. (OMG, has this thing really been in my head for two years!?)
I think NaNo is awesome for first drafting! Because yes, write, write, write, and worry about revising later. First drafts (at least mine anyway) are always demolished and reconstructed entirely, so there's not much point in picking at things on a revision level.
But during NaNo this year, I'll be working on ch. 12-18 of my second-ish draft, and stories from Matt, Leila, and Nessa for LH. So even though I won't be doing an official NaNo, I will be writing craploads of stuff! Maybe I'll take the spirit of the month and let it inspire me to get all this stuff done!
I never knew there were official meetups. Seems counterproductive to me, since you really need to have your head in a computer and writing, lol!

I set my location on the web site, and a local group would send out mass emails saying where they would be. It seemed to be a solidarity thing. Everyone would plan to get together and write. Sounds... interesting. There was one group like right here in my city. We're not that big, so to have a group at all-- I was slightly tempted, just too shy to go.

I really do want to, I just don't think I'd finish. I tried the JulNo for the first time. I got some good stuff out of it too but I don't always have the time I'd like to devote to it. I may give it a go again and see how far I get this time.

Haha, no. I cannot do the write and edit later thing. I cannot. I think the most I've managed in one go before editing anything is 600 words. I'm just slow. Slow is how I roll. If the people who are doing it wanted to make a support thread for it here, that'd be cool.

I have considered it (though I don't like the Na bit - the web is global, though I'm sure I've said this before) but definitely not this year, I have a PhD to write. It's something I'd definitely consider some time though.

I think I will. It will be good motivation for me and a good stress release. And maybe I can finally get beyond 2 chapters. Instead of getting stuck, I'll just write and pull out all the good ideas for later!

I did it last year and it didn't go so well. I don't think I'll have the time this year. Maybe I'll try it again next year.

My cousin told me about it last year, but it was December by then so I had just missed it, but I'm definitely going to try it this year, it seems like a fun idea, although I doubt I'll even get halfway finished with it. My problem is I like to write in notebooks, and it's just so time consuming to type everything up!
Also, apparently there is something called GothNoWriMo or something going on in October, where you try to write a Gothic novel about 25,000 words I believe. I'm not going to do it, because gothic isn't really my thing, but if any of you guys would be interested, you can check it out I guess!

So if we're going to have a thread on it (other than this one? Needed or not?), we can call it GloNoWriMo with Glo for global.
How much prep should one do beforehand? Character profiles? Plot points? Or is all that supposed to be in Nov?

You're absolutely allowed to prepare beforehand! Just no actual writing. You can do everything you need to do so that on Nov. 1st, you can just start writing. Of course, if you're not sticking to the official rules like I never do (lol!), you can do whatever you want

I've always been tempted but never went ahead and did it. I don't have any ideas for this year so I can't say that I will be joining in the merriment.

I've worked out what I'm going to do with NaNoWriMo! I'm going to do my Sims story. That way I'm going to be way way in front by the end of the month!

I love the idea of NaNoWriMo. I tried it last year, but ended up giving up like five days in. The older I get, the more difficult I'm finding it is to just sit down and write--I need my edits, I need my outlines, I need my various notes. At this point, I think I could only do NaNo if I didn't have school or work to worry about and could just work on the novel 24/7. Best of luck to everyone attempting it! You have my support

I'm going to work on my outline today, while the latest WoW patch is downloading, and causing my PC to grind to a halt internetingly.
Here's a question - do I post up all the writing I do in the blog as I do it, or save it for weekly updates, so that the November writing will last the blog for all year? <LMAO>

I made a decision...today. I'm going to cheat a little. Instead of working on one story, I'm going to just devote 25k words each to my two sim stories. I may be able to finish REVERSE since that's around 40-something chapters, but it will still take a bit to finish TAU after this since that will only be around...25 chapters. It seems like a lot of people are doing this according to the forums. Yay, cheating!

I'm working on one novel..... with 5 interlocking short stories of 10K each. I'm such a cheat! And as far as I'm concerned.... It's not cheating!

I wouldn't consider that cheating at all. I was going to work on a novel, but I don't have it planned enough for my tastes. Maybe I'll give it a go next year.
