So I got to wondering how many of you back up your story pictures? How and where, and in what versions?
Do you back up the original full-size picture, as well as the resized smaller picture you post on your blog? Do you back up all of your originals? Or none of them?
Me, I only back up the resized and edited versions of my story pictures (the ones I actually post on my blog), and I'm pretty sure I have nearly all of them. The ones I don't have are from the very early stories, which are small and compressed, and I actually want to redo those anyway.
But for space reasons, I don't have any of my original picture files. Until recently, it would have been impossible, since each picture is about 2.5 MB in its full size, and my blog has something like 5000 pictures on it. But I got an external hard drive recently, so I guess I could start saving them, if I wanted to. From this point forward, I mean. The ones deleted already are long gone.
But I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort. I started to go through some of the originals I do have - give them unique names and such and put them into a file, and then I was like, oh hell, this is WAY too much work, lol!
It would be such and random and improbable event that I would ever need my originals, I think. Wouldn't it? The only thing is that if I ever wanted a bigger version of a blog-sized picture, it couldn't be done. You can't really expand a picture that's been sized down and edited and saved.
Seeing as how I've already not saved 2.5 years worth of original story pictures, there's probably no point in starting to worry about it now.
But I still wonder what you all do.

LOL, Illandrya, that's like almost exactly what I do, even down to naming the pictures! Usually storytitle01... storytitle25 or whatever. I do the LSB save for each of my text entries, which is then exported after a full season to a word document, lol!
Yes, that's basically what I'm worried about, if I ever lost the blogs, I'd be able to recreate the story (with much work, lol!), but I'm just wondering if I should be worried about anything I'm not already worrying about, lol!
Laura = neurotic, for sure!
Okay, I'll stop now ;D

I save everything, but I don't resize my shots or edit them or anything so they are just saved in a folder with the chapter name.

I have 5 external drives. Not only do I save the picture files, I save the original shots from which they're done and all the bits in between. But mostly this is for my Sim creations - I've been creating for sims since Sims1. I have 3 back-ups of my website in 3 different places. Now THAT is neurotic!

I used to save all the originals, but they're so BIG. So now I just save the published shots. I organize them for Ruin by story and then by chapter, and for the most part they have unique names, but they're not ordered names.
I will save the originals for a short while though. I know that I'm going to end up deleting some and then needing those ones I've deleted.

Kiri, I just think that's sensible. But you're talking to the girl who has about 20 backups of her hood on her external hard drive, lol!
Anyway, I save all the originals. I guess I might end up running out of space but no sign of that yet. I'd probably buy another external HDD before I deleted them. I love having the full size versions to look back at.
They're not really ordered though. I never end up deciding on the exact order the pictures will go in until I'm in Blogger and obviously, at that point, they're already named.

Hmm...I don't really back up my pictures, but I think it's because by the time I actually put it all together it feels like I've been moving stuff around so much (lazy).
I take pictures on the desktop computer, then move those pictures to a flash drive so that I can put them on my computer. I usually don't leave the copies wherever they were (I cut instead of copy). I have one big folder that has folders for each story in my series, and in each of those folders I have folders for the chapters. Inside each of the chapter folders is a folder called "Originals" and that's where I tuck away all the original pics for a chapter shoot. The resized and edited versions of the pictures are saved in the chapter folder itself.
My earlier chapters would have the pictures plus text replicated in word, but since I started using LSB, the pictures are kept separate from the text.
I should look into backing up my blog....maybe. I don't know why I'm not more worried.

Ah, see you guys are all using chapter folders!!! Don't know why I never thought of that, lol! But yes, that would eliminate my frustration with renaming things. Thank you all for sharing your neurotics with me! It's nice to know some like-minded people! Rachel, I bet there is a way to back up an entire blog, but likewise, I could never be bothered to find out how. And I don't know why, since losing the thing really would be a tragedy, lol!

You can export an entire blog and save it somewhere if you use Blogger. I've done it and imported it back with no problems.

SB: I use WordPress, and it turns out there's an option to do that! I saved a copy of my entire blog up to the last month, and I think I'll try to make a habit of backing it up every month or so. Thank you!

Yes, Shana told me about that option in one of my frequent "I hate Blogger and their crappy missing comments" rants. When they finally get rid of the original editor, I may need that option so I can move my whole blog elsewhere. The new editor is impossible to work with. But that's off-topic.

Stacy: It's under Tools in the Wordpress dashboard. Choose "Export" and it will bring up a prompt so you can save it somewhere else.

I have backups of all my pictures on an external HD... but not of the text. Maybe I should back that up sometime...

When my computer went in the shop last month I had one horrible day where I thought I lost everything. I have become a fanatic about backing everything up now, Text, pictures, work in progress manuscripts, everything. Thankfully, the computer tech found the files elsewhere on the computer. I was lucky. I was ready to throw myself in front of a runaway moose.

Drew: runaway moose?!?! Excuse me while I pick myself up from a giggle fit on the floor! I love that - mind if I use it sometime?
Rachel: wow! Never knew that WP had that backup function. Thanks!

I make it a point, ever since I had two external hard drives die on me within a year of one another, to always ALWAYS back up EVERYTHING anywhere I can. This includes Sim stories, as you can well imagine.
