Jumping in here... >.< I hope this is okay... all of your neighborhoods and villages and cities are so great. Qui, yours always blow me away with the amount of detail. And beth, I agree with Illandrya... you really don't need to sell yourself short! You are great! Here is something I've been working on for Spanish Lullaby... it is Carlos' home town from where he grew up; La Perla, San Jose, Puerto Rico. It is a slummier area of Puerto Rico. Here is the reference picture, and then mine in Sims. I didn't find the actual picture until later, I was just going off of what I'd seen in youtube videos and stuff. Also, it sucks. But oh well. Gahh I'm going to so be late for work but I wanted to share this. You are all so great at building and have no idea how many of you pose as inspiration for my own buildings. : :

Qui: OMG!!! The train with the platform and the stairs to what looks like an upper platform - that's incredible! Where'd you get the train? How did you come up with that whole set?

I have never been to Puerto Rico before but damn I feel like I have with that neighborhood Christi! That is amazing!! Thank you ladies!! The bar was already up and running so I just placed in on a corner and threw neighborhood decor around it. When I wasn't sure how it would look, I went into that lot and thought about the feel of the bar. It's supposed to be a nice bar. About 20 years old and while it hasn't changed on the outside too much, the neighborhood around it has. What once used to be opened land and a few buildings around the train tracks is now a street lined with buildings and young faces. That's it. That train set came from MTS www.modthesims.info/d/319998

Wow, such awesome pictures of your hoods. @qui I love how you use that train set. I can't ever get mine to place right. The building in this picture that looks like a parking lot? Is that a hood deco or a built lot, because it looks great! Such a good detail for the train station too. @themctavishams, I really think you've got the atmosphere of that neighbourhood down. So much detail! And it looks like you had fun while building it too.

Thank you! That building I also love since it does look a lot like a parking garage! It is neighborhood decor that I downloaded from here.

I am so jealous of sims 2 being able to have cars parked on the road. I hate that in sims 3 you have to have a parking space on the lot because over here (in the UK) you'd only have that in certain neighbourhoods. I also wish we had public transport in the game other than the invisible subway. Oh well...
This thread's interesting. With Operation: Population nearing its end I'm thinking about my own hood and how to get started on it. How do those of you that play whole hoods for your stories go about it - did you set up the basics first and then add other venues as and when you needed them?
I'm still a little nervous of Create-a-World. It seems like it'd take a lot of time to get anything done in it. Right now I'm considering using an existing hood and modifying it as much as I can. Those of you who've used (TS3) rabbithole rugs and similar, a) do they work in Late Night and b) if you have a hood with existing rabbitholes, can you just remove those in edit world?
I am thinking of starting my 'hood blog up before I start the story or create all the characters so I can talk about my adventures in setting things up if that'd be interesting for people?

I just don't know if they'll realize once you put a new rabbithole down that they can report there. (They honestly might know.) I think that would definitely be interesting, and helpful too for people.

I just wanted to pop in to say that I loved looking at pictures of everyone's neighborhoods! I've been working on my downtown for months now, but it's extremely sparse. That's why I haven't included any pictures of it in my story blog yet. Even my main hood is pretty sparse, which is why I haven't included a neighborhood map yet. Hopefully I will get some building done soon and have something to share here.

I've been meaning to write in this thread....
HC was/is a labor of love. It took me about a month to get everything laid out and it's still not perfect in my eyes. It wasn't even the first hood I build, you can jump over to my babble thread to see Wonder City, but it's the one I love the most. I actually started it before I came to the conclusion that I was going to write a blog and when I decided to start writing I knew that HC had to be complete before I even got to that step.
I set up neighborhoods and made sure all the buildings matched in style. I still have to go through the process of naming the streets and I don't have a proper map done yet. I made a list of every type of community lot I wanted from the coffee shop to the strip club up on the Hill. I had everything planned before I knew which map I was going to use.
Right now I'm using the default map for the downtown area but that's fine for now because I don't really use it. I planned HC so that everything I needed fit onto one map and I wouldn't have to wait for subhoods to load. I use it now for characters that don't have anything to do with the current storyline but will probably pop up later or any Playable NPCs that I want to house off the Cove to save space. I keep thinking I want to modify it and change it around once I get some kids around teenage because that's where my technical school is going to be based. All in good time really.

Sarahjane, that's why I'm trying to find a smaller DT map. The only way to keep our default DT from looking sparse is to stuff it full of NB decor.
HC, you don't have problems with the NB crashing when you fit a DT area onto the same map? I'm envying the street names and the organization. And I'm wondering what makes a particular NB a favorite?

sb No crashing. My map is pretty small though. I can't use a lot of the hood deco I would like to because it just won't fit. I tried to place Criquette's bus depot somewhere and it was like yea right. I have very few large lots and none of them are the 5x6 things. IMO a downtown area is all about the look. In HC, I designated the downtown area the Warehouse district. It has an art gallery, a coffee shop, a jazz lounge, etc. My favorite hoods are ones that look well put together. I have a puzzle piece hood. It's very hard to move things around because everything fits together in just the right way. I when NBs look cohesive or I don't know like a hood should. LOL

That is what I'm finding. I think I was overzealous when I designed my dowtown; I wanted it to look like NYC, and I laid out more city blocks than I can fill! I haven't run into any problems with my graphics card yet, so I think I'm going to keep trying to fill it out and hope my computer can handle it.

HC, I've been considering using SC4 to modify our main map, mostly because I can't use all the streets and I'd like to get rid of them. It doesn't look that hard to do. You might be able to add a couple of 5x6 blocks that way, or by using the Lot Adjuster.
The planned blocks and neighborhoods look fantastic. Several people here have done an incredible job with them. I cheat as much as I can, moving lots around so I can use new places and depending on the NB decor to hide what I've done. I'd love a map with some terrain landmarks (like the one Muzegoddess uses), but it would make it harder to hide mistakes.
And Sarahjane, unless you need an overhead view, nobody is going to know that the street level shots weren't taken in a completely finished city. Our DT is crammed with objects and empty lots and doesn't seem to crash, but I never use the whole thing. I hate that empty horizon view, like that's the end of the world out there.
