I've been reading lots of threads here, and lots of your blogs/stories, and... I can't help feeling very intimidated. I have big complex about my spelling, grammar and vocaublary... I'm french, and I don't frequent french forums, just because I can't stand bad (french) grammar, and I hate having to read out of loud to understand a text, just because it's written in phonetics, but I do know it's exactly what I'm doing in english (well, I don't write in phonetics, because I don't even know how what I'm writing should sound... *lol*), so I was wondering what was your tolerance to "baby-talk"? Is it as unbearable as it's for me in french? Or do you have a latitude for foreigners? Also, could you consider writting in a language that you only learnt at school? Like writting in spanish or whatever? I chose to caption my Sims pictures in english and french, as I didn't pretend to really "write", but I already feel so frustrated with my tiny vocabulary. Where I'd have a dizain of words in french to express something, I can only find one in english, and dictionaries don't help, because they don't give me all the background of a word. I end up by writting like a kid in english and french, because I don't want to write a novel in french, and two poor sentences in english, but... I wonder... *lol*

I was never any good at French in school, we only learnt our second language in secondary school, although I think that has changed now, and I have never hated a class more. Language just was not my thing. Your English is brilliant. There is nothing wrong with your English. But I have to admit I am one of those hypocritical people who dislikes reading bad grammer such as text speak, and spelling mistakes, but I know full well that my grammer is less than perfect, and my spelling is atrocious. A great website I find for looking up the meanings, alternatives and in some cases history of a word is Dictionary.com. It also gives you a word of the day which I don't use as much as I should.

Meh, I make so many type-os. I'm fine with some errors because I understand that a pretty good amount of forums have people who's first language is not English. And don't feel intimidated. We're all pretty friendly.

In reality my first language isn't English either, so my spelling and grammar can be awful and I suppose I am often not that creative when writing. I make most mistakes by getting times wrong...past, past tense etc...can totally mix them up and not even notice. I have been speaking English as my first language for last 8 years (confusing I know), but was born in Estonia and lived there most of my life. What is most odd is that I speak fluent English...most people never realize that i was born elsewhere and spent most of my life speaking a totally different language. Unless I tell people, they got no idea...apparently i do not even have an accent. My kids speak only English and my mind works in English...however the moment i start writing a doubt sets in and i can end up with most awful stuff...mostly because I am constantly questioning myself and the words...something you don't do when you speak. To write well I got to take loads of time and rewrite awfully lot. I am probably never going to be amazing, but ok does it for me. Back to the topic, I suppose I am relatively tolerant with spelling and grammar stuff, but mostly because I am no good myself.

Since we are on the internet I am pretty tolerant. Most of the writers of sims stories are working by themselves and may have only have a few people to help them. Self-publishers aren't getting paid usually and if they have someone to edit them the person is a volunteer. It would be foolish to expect the perfect grammar and spelling under those circumstances.
Sandy if you write anything like the way you post here you should be fine IMHO.

Honestly, I can't scrutinize someone else's grammar when I feel so insecure in my own. I have no excuse either, since English is my first language. I usually do well with technical writing, but creative writing is an entirely different animal. Of course, the ideal story would be both invigorating to read and have fantastic grammar, but I would easily excuse imperfect grammar if the story drew me in; especially if the author is not a native English speaker. If someone told me to sit down and write my story entirely in Spanish, I couldn't do it...so I am immensely impressed with those who can write in a language that is not their primary.
