I think I'm addicted to this site. Its fun having people of like mind, who won't look at you weirdly because you said the Sims, so now I bring you another question.
How much time and effort do you put into decorating your Sims' homes, dorm rooms, businesses, etc.?
I find that I take a lot of time with my core households and always try to reflect their personality in their decorating. It only occurred to me that I did when I went into Nina and Gregory's house after Sam's.
Sam's house is very masculine, with dark woods and jewel tone colors, while Nina and Gregory's house is warmer but very formal. It shocked me how much my furniture choices for them revealed about their personalities, kinda fun too.
So how about y'all? Is decorating revealing or just a necessary evil?

Yes, absolutely! I love making them really personal too. Like the Watts family farm house is decorated with Leila's potholders and quilts, with a country theme since that's what she's into. Then my Deppiesse family is modern and minimalist, which fits them since Violet is a sci-fi writer and Orion is a tech-nerd (and they're part alien, lol!). Or Melissa's bedroom with her pictures and bug collections on the walls (I have a ton of fun decorating all of my Sim-kids bedrooms!). And Berjes' apartment is masculine, very simply (un)decorated and basic, since he's a doctor and almost always working. But my favorite so far has been decorating Amelia's house, since she's so trendy and stylish. I'd love to live in Amelia's house!

For me, it depends on what I'm doing with the Sim. In my legacy, the Sims are deliberately designed to have very little personality, (they're a bunch of point scoring min/maxers), so their house has only minimal decorations. The few that they do have are either put down to increase the moodlet score in the room, or to be silly (they collect TS1 Goth paintings, for example).
But if I'm playing a Sim for fun, he'll always have a house carefully decorated to express his personality.
And if I'm taking pictures - cha. The set decoration is even more important to me than the appearance of the Sim!

Whenever I'm building a set, I take a lot of time to decorate. Things have to be 'just so'. But as far as my Sim houses go, for my stories....I was so anxious to start taking pictures that I just moved Ed into one of the huge TS3 apartments in Sunset Valley, and her parents were moved into the little bungalow by the beach. I didn't even think about personal decor or anything until I had to build Iris's apartment set, which...because I'm lazy, was built on the third floor of Ed's apartment, while the exterior pics were taken at Gobias's house in Sunset Valley. Later sets were built from scratch.

What I love most about the Sims is building and decorating so I do tend to spend more time doing that than actually playing the game.
Like you, I decorate according to the sim's personality.
For my stories, I also do a fair amount of decorating if I build their house, other times, I might search for the right premade lot if I am in a hurry and need to shoot scenes straight away.
For IHS, I built the hospital myself and spend a fair amount of time decorating the reception, waiting area and Hope's hospital room. The rest of the building is completely empty. I've thrown up blinds to hide that fact if there are shots from the outside. Bascially for stories, I decorate only what is required.
For play, I could end up spending up to 4 hours just building and decorating the place depending how big or small or involved the lot is.

I've thrown up blinds to hide that fact if there are shots from the outside. Trees are good for that, too. I mean, when you're photographing on the inside and want to hide the lack of appropriate stuff outside.

I used to spent a lot of time on decorating. But since the DeCasims I tend to go for the max decorating moodlet and leave it at that. Saying that... when I created the set for Moon Man - monthly exercise for October - I decorated each and every one of the huts individually... and it never even showed in the story!

I'm trying to learn more about it. I love other people's decor but always hate my own.
Any chance we could move this out of Sims 2? It seems more relevant to general stuff and I nearly didn't find it because I don't play S2.

I always built sets...unless there were important Sims who needed real homes. Usually my characters have a certain favorite color; therefore their rooms or houses entirely resembled their love of that color. It usually took my aunt 4 days to weeks to build houses...me...10 minutes or so on a good day, 10 more minutes to decorate. I usually had in mind exactly what was going in which room and how it was going to be placed.

totally and completely obsessive about decorating. down to the landscaping, the street lights, every single insane detail. After three years of building this world along with Gayl, we've got it down though.

I go overboard with decorating. I used to write for the sim decorating magazine Living Sims before TS3 came about and I learned so many decorating tricks there. I put a lot of effort into personalizing homes, sometimes an entire playsession is simply decorating. I like to have personal photos-so I've made snapshots into paintings using the BV Travel painting. These are my favorites since they come in different sizes and mat/frame colors. Each house is different according to the sim and family. So I display travel items, ethnic items, personal photos, bug collections, and use their favorite colors as well. (I like to personalize my simmies' lives, even with their weddings I would make thier wedding dresses and upload them to my FSBS wedding attire website: www.freewebs.com/apentragnani/)I used to make a posting about it when a sim was redecorating, I'd chose colors and items and mood boards, everything. This is Jolie Dawson's redecorating post: applevalleyblogs.blogspot.com/2008/04/redecorating.htmlNow I help greeneyedsims with her FSBS recoloring website "Sim City Furniture" www.freewebs.com/keithdalton/index.htmMaybe I go a bit overboard, but I tend to have DADD (Decorating Attention Deficit Disorder) in RL and I also love to design and decorate in RL, so the next best thing is doing it for my simmies.

I've noticed lately now that I'm trying to pair down my Dl folder so I can get back into the game that its hard to make every house individual if you don't feel you have the right stuff. I'm finding it hard to justify that one little download.

I have been working on a house for 3 days now...decorating! I like everything to be perfect. My record is 2 weeks to finish a house. And yes...landscaping is very important.
