What was the last really good movie you saw and would you recommend it and to who? It doesn't have to be a movie you saw at the cinema, it could just be one you rented from the store or saw at a friend's place etc. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This is an oldie, but the movie is called 'Equilibrium' and it stars Christian Bale. I was definitely drawn by the concept and the gritty feel of the world. It's the sort of "story" that appeals to me, a lot. A society that has gone backwards rather than forwards and a regime hellbent on the big brother complex. A single man decides to rebel against all odds. You get the drill. I'd recommend it to people who enjoy a good tense sci-fi film where less emphasis is on the gadgets and 'tech' and more on the society and the people. It's also one of those films that has that "realness" about it; that it could be a possibility for the human race.

Ah, "Equilibrium". That is a good movie. Shawn Bean (I'm sure I'm spelling his name wrong!) is dreamy in that movie. Although "Equilibrium" is a good movie, it does also remind me of "V for Vendetta", which had a similar world and same idea toward art, music, etc. The last movie I saw was on HBO while on vacation just a couple of weeks ago. It was "The Secret Lives of Bees" staring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifa, Jordin Sparks, and Alicia Keys. It also had the one actor who played Geoffery Chaucer in "A Knight's Tale," whose name escapes me. It's only one of a few Dakota movies I've seen and definately worth watching. I'm no good at reviewing movies, but as I said: It's a must see. Before that was the midnight showing of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince." I'll admit it--I'm an HP fan. But I'm not overly fan-girly, and I certainly don't sport HP shirts or carry around little Daniel Radcliffe dolls. I've read the books and have seen/own all of the movies (besides this last one, obviously). It took me close to four years to give Harry Potter and his incredibly detailed and masterfully created world a chance, but I'm glad I did. There are a lot of movies I could recommend; I just don't want to hog up all the space!

Inglourious Basterds Honestly the trailer made me sick, because it seemed all needlessly bloodthirsty. But we went to see the movie, because I do rather like Tarantino movies and it was getting good reviews. It was my 15 year old sister-in-law's first Tarantino movie. Awww. And for once we agreed on something - we both liked it enough to want to see it again. I spent the winter I was nine reading all the books in the local library on the Holocaust, and I've researched it more from time to time since then. So WWII is very interesting to me and I know a fair bit about that time period and love WWII movies. And no, this one isn't realistic. But it's wonderful beautiful art. And the villain - oh, he's perfect. And I love the heroine as well. I do hide my face in John's shoulder for the more violent bits, but there aren't that many of those. Plus, come on, how can I not like a movie with a climax like that? Don't want to spoil anything, but yeah.

I saw ' Moon' in the theater, and it was good. It was an interesting concept, and the isolation was almost a character itself. I wanted to see ' Surrogates', but it's getting such bad reviews that I haven't mustered the nerve to go see it. I recently re-watched ' Edward Scissorhands'--a great one (a good blend of comedy and tragedy).

Ooooh movies.
I was just cleaning out my old box o' VHS tapes, trying to figure out what I want to buy on DVD - and found my copy of "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn. Y'all should definitely netflix that one if you like suspense movies. It made me scared of my refrigerator light.

Ooh...I have that one on DVD, Catherine--my mother-in-law gave it to me as a gift, and I haven't even watched it yet. I will definitely give it a look!

Just re-watched Stranger Than Fiction today after recommending it to hoopty and he liked it. I have to admit, I went into the bathroom and had a bit of a cry after the end. Identified with Emma Thompson's character more this time around. It wasn't a happy cry or a sad cry. More just a cry. Maybe an epiphany cry.

I remember that movie Stacy. It was a nice quirky one and yeah I know what you mean about identifying with Emma Thompson's character. Recently watched an anime movie called "5 Centimeters per second". It was an interesting look at time and distance and how it affects us and who we become. Very thought provoking piece of work.

I HAVE seen the play, and I highly recommend it. For movies, I love North by Northwest. Suspense, humor, adventure and romance, all with great pacing and amazing cinematography! If you need a comedy, it's hard to find a better one than Noises Off. Great cast and face-aching hilarity!

Recently went to see 'Avatar' and yes, all the hype surrounding this movie is actually true for a change.
It didn't feel like two and a half hours because it seriously flew past and the pacing was perfect for the storyline. OK, so maybe the whole concept of transferring a consciousness into another being is something that intrigues me (for those who have read my TS3 story, you can see why I'd be interested).
It was well worth it. The concepts and issues in this movie, whilst not anything remarkably new, are still fascinating. Sam Worthington is proving himself to be an "action" actor who is also able to tap a depth of emotion that also makes his characters 'vulnerable'.
It's become my new 'favourite' movie, the world building of the navvi alone is no doubt inspired by many existing past cultures and legends, maybe even present culture and folklore; but still incredibly immersive and real.
What really stood out for me was that the story, despite being set in another world could certainly happen here and has happened here in many countries.
It's a movie that makes you think and ponder. I certainly spent the night thinking a lot about this movie.
Most people will watch it as pure entertainment, others might see into the heart of the story and glimpse the message there. Either way, it's still one hell of a movie and one of the best I've seen in a while.

I saw it yesterday! I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. It is a visual treat, very lush and full. The flying scenes keep replaying in my mind. On a more cerebral level, the issues offer much to ponder. Carnaxa, I can see exactly why you wanted to see it. :-)
I also thought it was interesting to see a cast that featured someone from Lost, someone from Friends, and someone from Bones. Weird to see Ana Lucia smile!

I'm really eager to see Avatar! We don't have a babysitter here yet though (sheesh, we've been here almost a year now, I guess it's about time to get on that!), so we'll have to wait until DVD probably.

District 9 was all right. The first twenty minutes were in documentary form, which, though was boring, could not have been any other way. I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes. ;D and Iron Man 2! tator tots and cheese sticks

Oh Laura, do try to get a sitter if you can at all, because this is one of those movies that really make an impact on the big screen, like Star Wars or Jurassic Park. I saw it in 3D and LOVED the flying parts.
I'm thinking about seeing Sherlock, too, MDP. Thanks for the cheese stick! ~munching~
