Oh! If I ever build a house, I will have built-in bookshelves on at least one wall of every room. I have books double-stacked on shelves, which is really not fair to the authors of the books on the back row. I also have books in baskets on the floor and a few books stacked under a short lamp on a side table.

Right now I have only one bookshelf in the house-- err, well I should specify we're in a one bedroom apartment. So we don't have a lot of space and all my other books are at my parent's house.
But the way I have them organized is basically by subject which means it's also somewhat by like, and a bit by size. Top shelf is for the paperbacks, usually stuff that I don't read very often, so those can get stacked up a bit when I have to. The second shelf is full of my sci fi and Star Wars books. Many of those are also paperbacks so I can double stack them on the shelf or pile them on top of each other. The next shelf is for the hard bound classics and other curious books.
The last couple shelves are huge, so I put the large books and journals there. I have my dictionary and thesaurus plus various text books I kept from school. Plus extra binders, writing journals, sketch books, cooking books.
Uh, actually, my book shelf is probably a lot less organized than I make it sound, lol.

I'll confess that I'm not as much of a reader as I probably should be. I could probably fit all my books on one shelf and I don't see myself filling up the rest of that space any time soon. Most of my reading material actually comes from you guys

Ours is in the study, d; dad made bookshelves for it up to the ceiling, and it's packed, half of the shelves are double in rows, with odd bits of stationary, and some computer games (that aren't in current use) and some old playstation games on the shelves. On the floor we have the board games; not that we play them much, the argo books, and random odd bits purely because the dog keeps his toys in the study and when he starts chewing them he gets excited and damages things on the floor without meaning too.

Um...mine are all just shoved onto the shelves. I tend to clump books of similar size together but it takes me forever to find anything. But reorganising it would be too much like cleaning, so it's not getting done ever!

My bookshelf is here. Yes, I was so excited about it when I first bought it that I took a picture, lol! It's from Ikea, and it's amazing! It's quite a bit more filled out than that now. The empty squares are all filled with either canvas boxes or more books. Top row is non-fiction, grouped by subject, first my sex/philosophy/health/science books. Then hubby's design books. Then my lit journals and short story anthologies. The bottom three rows alternate fiction (alphabetized, lol!) with canvas boxes to hide random cluttery stuff. I have all of my writing reference books piled into one box. The other boxes have office supplies, or my music books, or other random things. And the last space, bottom-right are my poetry and religious texts. I am for serious about my bookshelf, folks!

Laura I love that bookshelf! And its so organized. Good score! My collection is currently in storage. But it used to look like this: blackdaisies.com/?p=954#more-954 (goes to my personal site). I organized it by type and size (type meaning paperback, hardcover, picture books, cookbooks, etc., not necessarily genre) I've had a lot more in the past but my older books went into deeper storage or were donated away. I think a lot of the new books I want to buy will be on some kind of e-format from now on.

My books are a mess, more books than space, in fact, one project in the new year will be rearrange, donate and pack away. I have books in piles, in boxes, in wicker baskets. On my night table, in the night able, piled next to...the night table. Now my media? No sweat, all DVD's in alphabetical order, music arranged by genre/type AND alphabetical. CD's and record albums. That just aged me, though, they are making a slight comeback, albums. Hubby is a bit of an audiophile, he is getting an AKAI reel-to-reel (used, natch) with some of his xmas money. Now, he is on ebay ordering used reels of music. Great, more media!

These are all double stacked, with more books behind the books you can see. Also there's plenty of books around that aren't in the cases - around my computer, the sides of the bed, etc. The rule is that the top two shelves are mine and the lower shelves are John's, except he does get one total bookshelf all to himself - the one with all the John Barnes books. Oh, and the stacks from the top of the shelves to the ceiling are his. Basically, the science fiction and occasional fantasy is his, the classics and YA lit and anthologies and esoteric nonfiction and Chuck Palahniuk are mine. dining room bookcase (with Luna on the couch in the background, awww - oh, and Oreo's foot! Oh! And the Darth Vader with Hershey's kisses that we found at a drug store after Easter! "Hey kid, I got candy. Get in the Deathstar.") left side bedroom bookcases right side bedroom bookcases (got the teddy bear for Christmas when I was one or two, and yes, that's a Joker poster. And you can see one of the stacks of books on the floor.)

The last time I boxed up all my books, I had 50 book boxes of them. Recently I got rid of 2 boxes of books - but you couldn't tell - all the bookcases, are double filled.
Tall Bookcases(7):
I have one bookcase 1/2 filled with Christian books, and 1/2 cooking books.
2 bookcases filled with fantasy and science fiction.
1 1/2 bookcases filled with craft, 1/2 book case filled with writing books and game DVDs.
1/2 bookcase filled with philosophy and music. 1/2 book case filled with computer books. 1/2 book case filled with Art and Design books. 1/2 book case filled with Children's books
Short Bookcases (4):
2 bookcases filled with classics and poetry. 1 bookcase filled with Pyschology books. 1 bookcase filled with talking books (Classics series)
Long Bookcase (1): 1/2 bookcase filled with records 1 shelf of Romance books 1 Shelf of General and self-help books.
I also have a wardrobe full of videos, Oh! and another bookcase in the wardrobe that boxes of DVDs.
I checked - and I don't have any photos of my bookcases... maybe that can be my next 52 week project! LOL
