These questions are in a stickied post on a non-Sims writing forum I joined recently and I thought it might be fun to post them here.
What compels you to write?
Why do you write?
What makes you write what you write?
What made you decide you liked to write?
What do you write?

Oh, and my answer to "What compels you to write?" is "The power of Seth!"

Okay, that did make me lol. The Power of Seth compels you!
These are all good questions, and every so often, I honestly will ask myself why I write.
What compels you to write? This I've never thought about. Writing for me is very much like eating and sleeping. I suppose then I do it because it's how I live.
Why do you write? I write because it balances me. It's like meditation. It centers me, calms me, and makes me look at the world in a different way.
That answer changes all the time, though. Mostly, I write because I need to.
What makes you write what you write? Curiosity, mostly. And interest. People frighten and interest me, and I think my stories are a way of playing with that.
What made you decide you liked to write? Well, in fifth grade I wrote a story about a world of darkness that was only lit by fire. One day a girl falls into the fire and as a gift to her people, she became the sun, so they wouldn't have to sit around fires anymore for at least part of the time. My teacher sat me down and asked me if I got any help. When she realized that I hadn't, she was very impressed.
But that didn't really make me decide I liked to write. That just made me think about it. I don't remember what made me decide to do it; I sort of just fell into it and enjoyed it.
What do you write? See the themes thread for that, lol. Mostly, I enjoy messing with perception, relationships, family, power, prejudices.

oooo, fun thinky questions!
What compels you to write? Compels? Um, the fact that the story's not finished yet. Must finish. Wait. I guess that would be for the question "What compels you to keep writing?" lol
Why do you write? I like words, and I'm fascinated by the relationship between marks on paper/screen and vocal sounds and actual ideas being communicated.
What makes you write what you write? whim of the moment, for the most part
What made you decide you liked to write? I always liked words. I'm a Scrabble addict, and I loved to read ever since I learned how.
What do you write? stories to share (often about relationships), poems for me

Hmmmm.. What compels you to write? I think it is just something in my nature or personality. Ever since I was a kid, I was making up stories in my head. My father introduced me to drawing and I would try to illustrate what was going on in my head and put words to the pictures as well. Why do you write? I think I like the challenge of trying to make the stories in my head come out well through words. I like attempting to make the visions and stuff I come up with in my head a reality that others can see--though I wouldn't say that I write for other people. I have stories and characters and dialogue in my head that I haven't encountered in all the things I've read yet, and so I guess I write so that it's out there to entertain me, as well. What makes you write what you write? I love a good mystery with a heaping dose of romance. I'm still struggling to write a good mystery. I like exploring characters and making them grow into whole persons. I wish I could say that I was exploring world views and morality and the meaning of life with my writing, but I don't think I've progressed to that point yet. What made you decide you liked to write? I can't really say there was much of a decision involved....I just kept doing it, even when it seemed like there were other things to do. I'd love stories I'd read so much that it would make me want to create something that I loved just as much, so I'd try to write it out. The attempts always fall short, but I was still entertained in the process. What do you write? Well, my primary project right now is my mystery series. I write fairly shallow mysteries with a lot of time devoted to developing characters and relationships. I write a lot of dialogue, and I'm trying to make my mysteries more complex and interesting. I also write for a Sim challenge that is purely for fun--I rarely think too much about what I'm writing there. Other than that, I don't write anything else. I don't really feel a need to write outside of the Sims medium, because it's just so much fun.

Umm, first can we start with my sarcasm? What compels you to write? the screaming voices in my head Why do you write? to make them shut up What makes you write what you write? drill sergeants What made you decide you liked to write? well, they started to get quieter when I wrote it down. What do you write? fantasy, mostly [echo: mostly] For more serious-nessessesesssss What compels you to write? The big kid in me. Why do you write? It's in my nature I suppose. What makes you write what you write? Fantasy has more possiblities to it than realistic fiction. I can have my characters do anything, be of any time, be in a whole new galaxy, which I prefer... What made you decide you liked to write? I really don't know...maybe a teacher once, or a parent, or a friend...maybe I found my voice was stronger in writing or that I plunged into the world of creativity and it just became my passion. Who really knows these things... What do you write? the answer is still the same as above...

What compels you to write?
Ideas kick it off, and I have many, many of those, but deadlines and accountability get it on the paper/screen.
Why do you write?
For pleasure, for work, for future prospects, because it's the way I best communicate.
What makes you write what you write?
What interests me and makes me want to explore things more; what amuses me and makes me want to join in with the amusement of others; what arouses passion in me and makes me want to share that passion.
What made you decide you liked to write?
I can't remember. I have been writing stories and projects ever since I could write.
What do you write?
My thesis (on a good day!), academic papers, presentations, lectures, tweets, blogs, sims challenges, sims stories. And in my head there are some novels and screenplays as well, some of which may one day make it into writing proper.

I decided to go ahead and do a copy and paste of my original answer. And then I'll write new answers - possibly tomorrow, because it's getting late.
What compels you to write?
The power of Seth!
No, really, it's...I have to because it's life. Writing is my soul. It is my life and my heart and my blood and my reason to breathe. I feel such incredible awesome joy when I am writing well. And even when it's coming slow and I am beating my head against the keyboard and taking seven to eight hours to produce one paragraph, it is still the most amazing awesome meaningful thing I can ever imagine.
I read on some agent blogs that people are like oh noes writing shouldn't be your identity and it's just a hobby and stuff. That ain't me. Writing is my identity. It's not just a hobby. It's not even just a lifestyle. Typing out these words, finding the right word, the right rhythm, the right everything - this is life. This is the real true blood and bone and gristle stuff right here.
So yeah, I'll stand up and say it loud and proud. I am a writer.
Why do you write?
Because I have to. Because the joy is addictive. Because it's who I am and how I live.
What makes you write what you write?
If you mean Sims stories in general - I love the community and the instant feedback and how the pictures add to the story and the way that I can push against the limits of the game to shape my plots.
If you mean Valley and 10 in specific - Valley went straight to my fingers from my subconscious while my conscious brain laughed and giggled and drowned in happiness chemicals. 10 - I know a lot more about the structure and plot of 10 than I did with Valley, but it's still just pretty much straight from my subconscious. And it's not a Sims story because I want to re-learn how to write without using pictures, so that perhaps one day I can try to get something published.
So I suppose all of my thoughts and emotions and experiences come together and shape the stories that I write.
What made you decide you liked to write?
Dude, I don't know. All I know is my mother gave me my journal from second grade and I wrote "I want to grow up to be a real true story writer" in it on three separate occasions, and once it was heavily underlined.
What Do You Write?
Love. Hate. Life. Death. Fire. Water. Stars.
I write symphonies and silly songs. I write tragedies and comedies with audience participation. I write of zombies and abs that sparkle and men who burn with dark fire and women who hold the universe within themselves.
I sing the keyboard electric.

What compels you to write?Sometimes its because I have a burning desire to get things down on paper... like if I'm in a mood (as we writers so often are ) then I will ensure that I can release some of that by writing in a journal, or a notebook. Often these moments in my real life become inspiration for a news article for the paper I'm currently on the editorial staff for or they become inspiration for my book, or a sims moment. Other times its because I need to destress, or because I really think I have something to say and that someone ought to listen Why do you write? For release... for comfort.... for attention? (That last one caught me off guard too) What makes you write what you write?Well, Anna's story (the novel I'm working on) is a semi-autobiographical tale about the guy who simultaneously ruined my life and gave me freedom. I am writing it for closure. Sims is just fun And I guess I have a lot of stress IRL, and writing stuff down not only gives me good ideas for other stories, but sharing it means I'm no longer alone in experiencing that stress. What made you decide you liked to write? The freedom of it all. What I write is mine, it belongs to me. That is a very selfish reason... but so much in my world is shared. My house with my boyfriend or my house at home with my parents. My life is shared with everyone I work with, and when I was younger, there was almost zero privacy -- so I had a diary. I choose when and where to share it and I like to think I'm rather decent at it as well (the novel writing and newspaper article part.. the sim part I'm still getting used to). What do you write?Reports for non-governmental organisations, newspaper articles on peace and conflict or real life issues, my sim blog, and Anna's Story, which is forever hard because its so personal. (I apologise for bearing my soul and making this post so long )

What compels you to write? Good question. The insistent voice in my head.
Why do you write? I love it, it brings me peace and serenity. It takes me to a calm place.
What makes you write what you write? Hmmm. I want to go on an adventure of my own making.
What made you decide you liked to write? I began writing as a kid/teenager, got away from it, then, when I got the sims game, I abandoned actually playing the game and used it strictly for storytelling, my love of writing reappeared, in spades.
What do you write? Romance *ducking* But not strictly, also mix in some drama and paranormal.
Great questions~ Made me actually think.

Oh hey, I actually just found this in my notes - guess I was working on it at some point and then lost it, lol! What compels you to write?- the voices in my head? lol! No really, the characters, they speak to me. They say funny things, and then I laugh out loud and look all strange because I'm laughing and nobody knows why. Or even worse, when they make me cry! So I have to write it down, you know, so I don't walk around randomly laughing and crying and looking ridiculous. Why do you write?- this is kind of the same question? What makes you write what you write?- I write about the things that fascinate me, or the things that disturb me. The best stories are both. What made you decide you liked to write?- I kind of already knew it, but my first real public writing was a fanfiction story, WAY back in the day. People liked it. I liked that people liked it. I'd been writing stories, and enjoying the way I could surprise and delight people (and make them cry) by creating these funny little people in my head. Because that's what these characters and their stories do for me, and I want to share that. Share the surprise and delight they give me. It would be rude to keep it to myself. What do you write? - I hardly even know how to categorize it, lol! I've tried. Stories of personal struggle and growth. With a good bit of sex in them. And some funny. And some tears. That pretty much covers it

What compels you to write? A sense of unease. If I don't write the stories in my head and heart get antsy and gives me trouble.
Why do you write? The sense of completeness I get when the words are flowing. I'm in and of the story and we're one.
What makes you write what you write? this is going to sound weird but, all my life I've been looking for a story that describes my world and makes sense of it. In my teens, I realised that I wasn't going to find it, unless I wrote it myself.
What made you decide you liked to write? I wrote for ages without saying that I 'liked' it. But in 2004, I thought I'd do a Creative Writing course as something to do. The first week I was there, we had to write a paragraph on something we remembered. When I read out what I had written, I got a stunned silence. That was when I realised that what I write has impact. So I like it to write.
What do you write? I set my stories in all sorts of different genres - but mostly fantasy and science-fiction. But that's the stuff I write outside the sims. In the sims, I write about relationships and damaged people, and I like to write from different points of view of the same event.

What compels you to write? My sims, and the 'starving artist' inside of me. If I don't write, all the unused ideas that my mind harbors just build up and...explode. Not pretty. Why do you write? The reasons vary. Sometimes I write to let out emotions and de-stress, and sometimes I write for the readers. Most of the time, I write for my sims. To give them a voice, whether it be humorous, dramatic, or horrific. (not too good at horrors though, I'll admit) What makes you write what you write? Ideas that pop in and out of my head, random occurrences in the game, etc. What made you decide you liked to write? The feeling of relief and excitement that I get after posting something. What do you write? Mostly just a typical narrative of my sims' lives that drifts into humor and drama. I guess you could call it a legacy.

What compels you to write?
Whenever the muse hits me.
Why do you write?
Because I enjoy it. I've been writing for years now...since middle school, in fact.
What makes you write what you write?
I don't know, actually. I just do.
What made you decide you liked to write?
I was a loner growing up and writing was an escape for me. I found that I was able to get feelings out that I couldn't have done in person.
What do you write?
Science fiction and fantasy, though mostly in graphic novel form. I didn't actually start doing Sim stories until a Sim was born in game whom I had named Rasputin. He was my inspiration to write Mikhailachev Manor, heh.

What compels you to write? The thoughts have to get out of my head. I've tried talking them out, even acting them out, but writing truely gets them out and makes the "real". I'm not right until I write.
Why do you write? I write because either I and/or my characters have something to say. They (the characters) don't leave me alone until I give them a voice and if I voice what I think they should say rather than what they want to say, they whine until I get it right. I write for them mostly.
What makes you write what you write? Again I have to blame my characters. They are the driving force behind what comes out. I listen to what they say, how they feel, and what they want the world to know and I just write that.
What made you decide you liked to write? I didn't want to like writing for a long time. As a kid I wore glasses and braces and I just knew that if I admited I liked to write I would never remove the nerd label. I gave all that up when I realized that I didn't function well without writing, even if I was only venting about my feelings on paper. Writing makes everything real for me so nothing is real without it.
What do you write? I tend to write about feelings emotions and certain situations that I have experienced or those that I can closely relate too. Also I was exposed to a lot of soap operas growing up and the adult contemporary aspect appeals to me, minus the crazy dramatic part of soaps.
