I have been downloading a *lot* of cc this month, and doing a lot of building in the Sims 3. Lately have been having problems with slow loading time, lag in the game, lag in build/buy mode, and the game taking forever to draw. I recently found a tutorial on Club Crimsyn's website and on MATY about how to combine package files using the S3PE utility. It isn't for the weak of heart, but I combined about 1500 of my package files into about 40, and it has been a godsend with helping my game run more smoothly. A few notes: 1. I didn't combine any hacks that I think would be updated frequently, or might want to remove. (So, I didn't combine Chaos Painting, any of Twallan's mods, or default skin replacements). 2. I have a combined file for hairs, three for home objects, one for clothing, one for patterns. 3. I also still have a backup folder of all the individual packages, but they just aren't kept in the Mods folder. 4. If you try to combine a corrupt file with others, it won't work. I also have some hairs that won't combine. 5. The first time I ran my game after combining packages and clearing caches, it did take a long time to load the game and regenerate thumbnails, but it got much better in subsequent startups. Anyways, I hadn't seen this posted here yet, so I thought maybe it would help some other people too with game laginess!

I've been doing this for a few months, and boy does it help. But I can never get the hairs to combine right. Any tips on making that work?

I don't know what is up with the hair either.
I combined what I could using batches and trial and error, but have 6 hairstyles that won't work.

I found with the hair, mostly early ones for me (HP's) that I had to leave out the ones that didn't work.
I was able to form packages for my hairs, but I did it in steps rather than all at once, so that I could spot the hairs that don't work. They're loose. I'm not convinced that I won't just remove them completely.

So will this stop the game freezing periodically whilst playing?

Yup That's a lag because it's loading packages. The fewer packages the less the load. (Although you may want to check that you've defragged lately, as that has an impact. And also the size of your paging memory).

*is all late* Thank you for that. I'd completely forgotten about this, so I spent last night doing this. I don't know if I have enough CC to really make a difference, but I'm still testing it out.

I have 4 Gigs of CC, and it makes a huge difference. If I hadn't added CC that was corrupt, I wouldn't be having the big worry I have at the moment!

I've just made a bunch of big package files (everything except mods and default replacements) - organised by type and when there's a lot from one creator then by type and creator (e.g. Anubis's hair is all one package).
Now to see if it works...

I didn't manage to get Anubis' hair into one package - It was a 4-parter for me. I've got my default replacements and mods in packages as well and they seem to work quite well like that. I'd encourage you to do your defaults.

So I tried... and loads of stuff went missing in the process. Mostly hair and clothes I think, but how frustrating. Will have to go back and do it bit by bit, I think. Most of the clutter and furniture packaged up OK.
I won't do mods or defaults, I like the freedom to remove them at will without faffing.

I didn't do the hair even. That was the first thing I started with before reading more and realizing that there are issues with those, so I left them alone and just cleaned it up.
I hope you get it all worked out, Rad! My preliminary test didn't show anything obvious missing, at least not on the main characters.

I might try just with clutter, furniture, paintings etc and leave hair and clothes alone for now and see if it makes a difference, then...

Are you using Lemon Candy's clutter? I've found that stuff acts weird, and actually I took it out because it was conflicting with the fancy OMSPs by making the game freeze up. I dunno why, but now I suspect that innocuous clutter of doing all sorts of weird things when your back is turned. Also, wow, even with what I had-- which started out near 2 GBs-- there is a clear difference. It's not nearly so painful now to get sims dressed! I'm going through and adding more now into the consolidated packages.

You know Lunar... I had put LemonCandy's clutter in - I wonder if that was what doing horrible things to me?

Huh, wouldn't that be horrible if it were? I don't know what she did with those, but they aren't normal deco objects.
