I'm glad you asked, Speechless, because I've always wondered that as well. I figured it would only count if they clicked through but didn't know for sure. Thanks for the info, Laura. There's someone right now who is reading through all my archives. She (I'm assuming it's a she, as most Sim blog readers and writers seem to be) is devoting hours a day to reading all of my old entries. This is amazing to me and I definitely take it as a big compliment. She may never comment but I guess I can assume she likes what she's reading. Carla, isn't it cool when someone takes days to read through all your stuff? It is amazing to me as well, and tickles me pink. They like it! They are coming back to read it all! A comment would be the cherry on the butterscotch sundae, but hey, it's cool nonetheless. Not that I am in a dark room obsessively hitting the refresh button on all my stats... ;D

Speechless, it won't show up on stats, but you can check subscription numbers to get a feel for how many people are subscribed. It'll only show up on stats if the reader clicks through to the actual website. I had a feeling it would work like this, which is a shame, as half a people who read blogs regularly use feedreaders. I found out that wordpress for instance only tracks those who subscribed to feed through wordpress button etc..but not if you use third party software. I myself use NetNewsWire (for mac) and FeedDemon (for PC) both sync also with google reader. I prefer standalone readers, as google reader is so ugly and not very handy, plus i like to have reader open all hours of day quietly somewhere. I do wish there would be way to see stats for how many people have subscribed to your feed, but unfortunately it is not really possible. Sad

Ah yes, that's a good point - Google only tracks the GoogleReader users. Also a lot of my readers use the Blogger feed too, and that's an entirely different set of subscribers, besides all the other feed-readers, lol! You're right, I guess there's really no way to know for sure.

I was wondering what people think about the 'like' function on WordPress. I rarely used it at first but lately I've found I get likes from people who've never/only occasionally commented on my stories, and I also find that sometimes, when I'm too tired to think of an interesting comment, I've been able to press that and at least let the writer know I read it and liked it. I don't know that it's as 'nice' as comments, but I'm beginning to appreciate it as at least a token gesture. Thoughts?

Like button is a lovely alternative, I was never idea there was that feature in Wordpress, but I guess I never looked for it. I think it is something I personally want to look into. You are right it is not as nice as a comment, but gives busy or lazy people at least the change to show their appreciation towards our writing. So suppose it is an alternative for those who don't have time to comment...

Blogger has a similar function but I don't know how many bloggers use it. I think I've seen different variations of it so I think you can customise it a little but basically, you can add checkboxes to the bottom of your posts so that people can tell you the post was "interesting", "cool", or "funny".
I haven't added it though, mainly because I'd be really embarrassed if no one ever checked the boxes! Because they'd be right there and require almost zero effort to click, so it would just look so sad if no one clicked them, lol!

I'd be willing to test it in Blogger if I could find it, and I can't. Where is it? At this point I don't care so I'll do it if somebody can tell me how to install it.

Hmmm, I just went looking for the option and I can't find it either. Maybe they removed it? It didn't seem like many people used it, from what I could see.

Carla, LOL! I had that exact same thought once! It's like, *sadder* than getting no comments at all, lol! ETA: Beth, it's on the design tab, and on the page elements, click to edit the "blog posts" box, and it's in there, under "reactions".

I see it, Laura. I'll ask Gayl if she wants to do this. It might be worse than getting no comments if there are a lot of bad reactions. Thank you!!!

ok did it but I don't see any difference. I *think* you have to have a google blogger template for it to show up, if you are using a third party template, you may have to add HTML code. Don't know how exactly, or if I am even right. Same with the twitter/FB etc logo, I had to add extra HTML code to add it to the Crime Story blog because the template was not from Google, but from 'ourblogtemplates.com' this is just a guess on my part~

I'm not using a third party template. It's pure Google Blogger template. I'd never add a twitter link like who would care but it's probably something to do with the template. Probably just as well. Very good guess on your part, Karen.

I'm a little late to the party on this one, but as its about commenting vs. lurking I figure I'll add my two cents.
In the blog she makes a comparision between bloggers and more standard websites. To me this is not a valid comparsion company websites are designed by professionals that are paid to build sites, they have their thank yous. If you are selling a product you are thanked in dollars and hopefully with low returns. Also people working in companies or selling products are often working with a group, a blogger is by herself she may have little or nor feedback.
Now I don't always comment, if a blog or a post has lots of comments then I don't worry about it too much. However if someone has a post or offering in their blog,lj or whatever and no comments or very few I always say something. Its a terrible feeling to not know if the people viewing whatever you have posted are getting anything out of it or not. I also think its a bit rude to never comment.
In America -I know not everyone posting here is American- we've forgotten how to say thank you and express gratitude. We feel we're always in too much of a hurry to stop and appreciate others and that is kind of sad. How long can it possibly take to type "Thank you, I really enjoyed that"? Think about what it will mean to the person who posted the story that you've enjoyed so much.
My Two Cents
