Last week I noticed that some of the thumbnails in the catalog were black. They're Maxis wallcoverings, and when I click on them, they show up and I can place them. Strange but so what. Then I noticed that some of the thumbnails for door arches said 'no pic': the same thing you see when you've loaded modular stairs but haven't installed them in the script file. I've never seen that on doors. When I clicked on them, the game crashed.
So this afternoon, with HUGE anxiety, I installed DDO again, carefully avoiding anything to do with orphans. There were a lot of duplicates, which I expected. I moved them to a subfolder and then to the desktop until I figure out if they really are duplicates. However, some of the duplicates would not move. They generated all kinds of errors. I left them alone (didn't know what else to do with them).
Any idea what's going on?

First thing - It sounds like your thumbnail cache has corrupted. You can delete the cache, and it will regenerate.
The folder/package is: \My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Thumbnails\CASThumbnails.package
Personally - I'd move all the thumbnails away rather than delete them, because I'm more conservative than that.
2. If the duplicates are not moving - then one of two things can be happening. a. They're not moving because some process hasn't let go of them. b. They're corrupted on the spot.
Rather than moving the duplicates with DDO, see if you can move them just normally in Windows Explorer. If you can - then DDO has got some problem with conflicting processes.
If you can't - then run disckcheck and see if that will fix things. It can usually correct the corrupt file issue.
Depending on how many duplicates you've got - there are alternatives to using DDO. Let me know how many you have.

Kiri, I can't get into DDO to get the number again since I've got the game loading up right now, but I believe it was something like 71 that could not be moved. They're all over the place, a wide variety of alphanumeric files and just about everything else. I'd move them manually using Windows Explorer if I could group them some way, but I don't have any way to identify them.
I did delete the CASThumbnails.package. I did that once before and had sort of a mess, but they did eventually regenerate.
It has been a long time since I ran diskcheck. I don't even remember how to do it but I'm sure I can figure it out.

Yeah - when you delete the thumbnail package, you need to go into buy mode, and go through all the pages to make them regenerate. (Not click on all of them, just scroll through the pages). CASThumbnails is for Create a Sim Thumbnails. BuildModeThumbnails - would be the one for your Doors and windows and stairs and stuff. Yeah 70 odd are too many to move by hand. Just looking up the URL for a program I have, it finds duplicate files and it's not Sims-related. That is, it will find any duplicate files based on the contents, and produces a list. What I do - is take that list into a spreadsheet to create a .bat file which will move the duplicate files into a single location. If you don't have a spreadsheet program, what you can do is send the list to me, I'll create .bat file to you, then it's just a matter of double clicking on it. What I will do though - is put up how I do it in the resources forum, so you can work out how to do it yourself as well. Kiri edit. The program is called "Duplicate File Finder (DupFiles)" - Funduc Software

There's definitely something wrong. I went into CAS and tried to go through the clothing catalog that way, and it crashed on me. That is the first time that has ever happened. I'm going to put the duplicates I moved out of the DL folder back in, in their separate subfolders, just to see if the crash continues. When something like that happens, I like to double check that what I just did didn't cause it.
I don't know how to get the list of dups to you using DDO. I think I can find my way through a program that finds any duplicate file though. Grabbing that link right now.
thank you!

Yeah - DDO won't do it. That's why I don't use it for duplicates.
I also find that it gives false positives, so I tend not to use it.

I was extremely reluctant to use it. The last time I did, I had similar problems. CI gives false positives on dups so frequently I don't bother with it either.

Returning the dups DDO identified back to the DL folder stopped the catalog crashing in CAS. You're right. It identified false positives.
Thank you, Kiri. I'll use the program you linked instead. I was on the verge of loading a backup and not feeling good about it. Thank you SO much!

You've probably already fixed this issue but one thing I noticed about DDO is that you have to rebuild the database when you have added or moved things or else it throws those errors. And I had such bad luck with DDO...my CC was fine until I tried to organize with DDO and that was when my crashing first started way back when last year.
