So I gave Catherine a rather large spoiler for the next Valley update, and then I felt the need to explain it.
And I realized that although I had no idea of anything really when I came up with the title it's actually very fitting.
The light of the fire is the shadow of death, and the valley of the sun is also the valley of the shadow of death. (And yes, I've already been thinking of phrases including those words to put in the update dealing with that subject.)
Honestly very very little of Valley is conscious, and I've been uncovering its themes and structure and what it wants to do as I go.
A while ago I wanted to do a Sims 2 legacy based around the reading I'd been doing about moral and ego development and the idea of the spectrum of good and evil - the witches in AL really offered a lot to play with there.
It never got off the ground, but I do think that some of its ideas stayed buried in my brain and wormed their way into Valley. Like I specifically remember thinking about how I wanted a transcendent ending. The founder was going to become an evil witch and a vampire and be the villain for the rest of the legacy, and it was going to end with her redeemed and stepping out into the sun.
Now that I think about it, she did have some stuff in common with Seth. LOL.
As Catherine will know when she reads my PM on Boolprop, the beginning of Daydream was something that just randomly came out of my fingers but I've come to see how it's really sort of the theme of the whole thing.
Fire. (Note the title of the most recent update.) Death. Alone.
Water.
And it fits so well with everything that came before Daydream. Fire, obviously, is a central part of the story. Lilith has been passive and dependent on other people ever since Nightmare. Seth has the Death part covered. And Water - ah, water. I don't want to give it all away so I'll stop there.
So anyway - I was wondering if anyone else had noticed metaphors and themes and symbolism and all that English class stuff emerging in their stories. Or maybe you're all organized and smart and think about these things beforehand and had it all planned out already.
