Does anyone else besides me have certain songs that they listen too or have inspiration from when they write.
In my case for Sonata the song is Dig by Incubus. For my side project, The Only Difference between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage, it is a Panic!at the Disco song of the same name for which the story was inspired by.
If so what is it?

I definitely do. I have my sad songs and my happy songs if I need to get into a certain mood to write a scene. I also have songs that tend to be more project specific. For [post] mortem I've been listening to a lot of Adele and Florence + the Machine. I find that I enjoy listening to Nine Inch Nails when I'm writing one of my non-sims stories. I just discovered one day that the weird melodies of those songs really get me in the groove.

If I'm writing poetry it tends to be in silence as I always write that first on to paper. If tings start as dreams like they usually do for me then it's silence aswell, but when I'm writing it I just have my entire collection of music playing in the background. Usually, of course sometimes I do only have certain artists playing if it seems like that which at the moment is Westlife - the more recent albums, Katy Perry because I keep getting the songs in my head, Kerry Ellis because you can never have too much Kerry, and the Britney Spears later years, more than the earlier ones, as sometimes you just need some more upbeat dancey sing a long songs whilst I write.

From Beth & Gayl's Sessions and Laura's Lakeside Height, I picked up the habit of finding one specific song or soundtrack to go along with each of the short story. Sometimes, when I don't have concrete ideas about how to approach a story, the song ends up becoming more of a writing prompt.

I feel a little odd here because I listen to zero music while writing. I find it only distracts me because I either end up singing along to the song or jiving to the tune. lol I've been thinking though lately of songs for my characters. It's tough but because I don't think you want to put too much thought into choosing one. You want to be able to hear a song and think, 'Yeah, that sounds exactly like so-and-so.'

Don't feel odd, Jennifer. I don't have one either because I'm sure I would react in the same way you would. I would love to have one because I definitely think it could help with some things, like with what lepifera said. I would like one if just it could trigger a writing prompt.

You want to be able to hear a song and think, 'Yeah, that sounds exactly like so-and-so.' That's how most of my soundtrack and theme songs come about too. If nothing jumps straight out at me, I just won't use a soundtrack for that story. But yes, I have an extensive and quite nerdy collection of songs made up for each of my works-in-progress, as well as one "theme song" for each main character. More than anything, I find they help me trigger each character's voice in my head. Since I have so many of them, and write so many different storylines, the songs are useful to sort of "get in the mood" when switching between stories.

There are a lot of story blogs out there where the author uses music and it has taken me quite some time to get used to it. I don't normally listen to the song they've chosen while I'm reading one of their updates. I tend to listen to it afterwards, otherwise I get too distracted. lol That's how most of my soundtrack and theme songs come about too. I've always admired the authors who added songs to their stories and it's something that I've wanted to do for a while but just haven't really had the time, or more like, found that song for that character. At the moment I'm leaning more towards my characters having their own theme songs rather than adding a song for each chapter. I think music does definitely help to add to the emotion of what your trying to convey to the reader. And extensive collection, I don't doubt but nerdy? I don't think so.

Music doesn't really affect my writing. It can be a bit hard to start a post sometimes with my sister turning up her loud music but once I've started writing, I'm away.

It depends what story I'm writing. Ive been working on a story now for months, mostly handwritten, and that story has very particular playlists and songs that I actually try and incorporate into the storyline at times. Other than that, its only if the urge hits me. Tegan and Sara is usually what I listen to, sometimes Cartel or even the Beatles. But other than the specific playlist for that one particular story, I don't use music in particular for any song at all.

I'm currently naming each chapter of my story after a song, which is really fun for me because music is a gigantic part of my life, and I feel that in a way, I'm making it a huge part of my sims' lives by adding it in their stories. I've got a list of about 20 songs that I plan on using, and I'm even coming up with theme songs for each season! So yeah, I use a lot of music while playing sims and writing stories. I do have to make it quieter though, or else I can't hear myself think. Right now, a song that I can't get enough of (and will be the Season 2 theme song) is Rabbit Heart by Florence + The Machine. It's wonderful.
