I am really not sure if this is the right thread to stick this but I was thinking about a funny little scenario; very hypothetically, if you could visualize a flesh and blood representative of your sims (in your current story), who would it be? When I was roleplaying, we would always have to pick a picture/avatar for our characters and I guess this has always translated into my other writing when I am trying to think of what my characters actually looked like in my mind. Here are mine: Hope Springs - Amy AdamsEthan - Jude LawDr. Talbot - Ian McKellenMallory - Britney MurphyCrista - Miranda RichardsonJason - Zac Efron

Oh! I've done this with other stories that I was trying to plot before I started using TS3, because I wanted something to look at when I tried to describe them. This is wonderful...I'll have to see who my characters match up with. Your choices are so interesting! I wouldn't have pegged Hope as an Amy Adams, but you're right.....she has that sort of quiet and innocent beauty.

In the sort of business I am in - writing Sim of the Month Challenges - I don't get to create my own Sims. They are created by Pinstar and I have to make them believeable somehow... give them flesh and blood. The only way to do that (for me) is to read and re-read their bio before I set out on their challenge. Then, while creating their story, I like to capture the essence of them... That's how I picture my characters.

Hmm, all my characters I made in my head long ago. Jack from The Gang was made to resemble my dream guy ;D Blonde, blue eyes, funny, carefree, but smart. Others just developed from how their attitudes and habits formed. However, I do every now and then go through celebrities to see who looks the closest to how I imagine my characters. carnaxa: Amy Adams is definitely Hope moondaisy: Making the characters is, one a favorite part of mine, and two very essential. You have to make them believable, as you said, through emotions, habits, and actions. But since you don't make your characters...how do you connect with them? After all, a writer has to connect with the characters or the reader can't connect to the character; therefore, he or she won't be believable.

I can only say: read at least one of my stories and see how I connect. I can't put it into words... yet. But I assure you, the moment I do connect is ... magical! I so totally understand your point of view and would love to create my own characters... but making something MOAR out of a pre-created Sim rocks my boat for now. Some people will think it less of a challenge... actually, it is more difficult (in my humble opinion). PS. Can't wait to see some of your work, I hope to get around to it soon!

I think it is possible to connect with characters you don't create--I would imagine it is a lot like being a good actress or actor. They have to bring a character with defined traits and looks to life. I think it must be more difficult, because they don't get to call all the shots, but it still has to be a part of them, somehow, or be a character that it is within their ability to portray.

I've been thinking a bit about fanfiction (sparked by this discussion thread). I have read some amazing fanfiction work and I am always in awe of the writers who are able to take a character created by someone else and write them without altering any part of their personality.
I find that very difficult to do (evidenced by my very poor attempt at SG-1, Pushing Daises, Final Fantasy and Firefly fanfiction!)

Hmm, an actor also goes by a script and directions of screen writers. Well, unless they're Johnny Depp. He does whatever he wants and that's how we have the totally awesome Jack Sparrow. I have before written stories of other people's characters (non-Sim related), but I'm not as emotionally attached to them. It is difficult since everyone has a different perspective in this world. For intstance, I might not see the same character as gallant as someone else. All of my Sims are characters from my manuscripts, written WAY before I discovered the Sims...well the Sims2 and now TS3. It's exciting to see them come to life in 3D. ;D But keep up the good work, moondaisy, you're stories are amazing. Shall we take a vote of how well you interpret characters? I call you a pro.

So right! Script and directions of screenwriters, directors... all very influential! And what about 'supporting characters'? How do we picture these? And how about those characters who are created, but take a life of their own and run away with the author rather than the other way round? Everyone is different... give a pre-made character to five writers and they'll all end up with a different interpretation. All interesting... different, yet the source is the same. That's exactly why a self-created character is so interesting. By it's very existence alone it tells loads about the writer/creator herself/himself, and how can a story be of interest if it doesn't spawn an interest in the writer? We relate to the characters in a story and then think... hey, who wrote this? And why write this? Thanks for reading, MDP, I'm looking forward to reading yours!

I'm fascinated by the idea of fan-fiction, Carnaxa! I never heard of it - which shows my naievety - but I'm definitely turned on by the idea of it. I'll have to look into that... I do believe I would stray away from the original character if I tried... but then I never did.

I loved your reply, Rachel. Only I go with MPD on the fact that writing about a pre-made character is more like writing a new screen play or different (film) directorship. A bit like, say interpreting James Bond and then writing a film for him? You still have to know who James Bond is, get into his character etc. But how James Bond will act is also up to the script? Mmm, maybe I'm extra-polating here.

Nah, it's ok moondaisy, rambling whatever you want to ramble about. Think of how many actors have played James Bond....whoa. Of course after the first guy did it they all kinda followed in his shoes, but they still had to show off their own take on the character. My aunt told me yesterday that Zac Efron would make a good Dewy for appearance purposes...I cocked my eyebrow and thought about it. He might. I don't know. I haven't really watched any of his work.

I don't know Zac Efron either, but I've seen Dewy now. I wonder how he will react at the party... Maybe I'll truly understand how you picture your characters then. I'm really impressed by your 'character spotlights'! A lot of thought and work have gone in that. You've got a keen eye for detail

Moondaisy - Fanfiction is bascially taking the characters in someone else's world and putting them in a different situation such as Harry Potter fanfiction, Twilight fanfiction etc.
I didn't even know who Zac Effron was until I watched '17 Again' recently. He's definitely what Jason would have been like in High School.
